What’s HVAC ductwork?

HVAC ductwork is used to distribute air in vehicles and buildings. It can be made of various materials and must be properly sized, sealed, and mounted. Residential and large facilities use similar systems. Ducts may be insulated and made of vinyl or hybrid styles. Proper sizing is important to ensure efficient airflow and prevent stress on fan units.

The term HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) ductwork describes any system of ducts and vents used to channel and distribute air throughout a vehicle or structure. HVAC duct systems are used in spaces ranging from automobiles to residential homes to the largest construction sites, but all systems share some common properties and all provide for air circulation. Ductwork can be made from a wide variety of materials, depending on the intended installation site and the characteristics of the HVAC system it is designed to serve. All HVAC ductwork must be properly sized, well sealed, and securely mounted to operate safely and efficiently.

A simple residential HVAC duct system consists of ducts that funnel air throughout the home from a centrally located furnace. Additional ducting is used to return air from one or more locations within a house to the furnace, after passing the air through a filter system. An air conditioning system will often be part of this cycle, as will a humidity control system, particularly in colder or drier climates.

Large facilities employ HVAC duct systems that are similar in principle but larger in size. Large central air ducts carry air through the buildings, and air is distributed from diffuser vents as needed. Filter systems in large facilities are also larger but serve the same basic purpose. Very large structures can be equipped with heating and cooling systems separated by zone or by floor.

HVAC ducts can be constructed from a variety of different materials. The most basic form of ductwork is made of simple galvanized metal held together with screws or fittings. Ducts may be insulated, to minimize heat transfer and to protect against condensation, a particular problem when ducts carrying very cold air must pass through a patch of warmer, more humid air. Ducting is also available in vinyl and hybrid styles, which can be beneficial because the vinyl component isn’t vulnerable to rust and corrosion.

HVAC duct systems large and small alike should be sized appropriately for the space they will serve. Systems that don’t have enough capacity place extra stress on the fan units that circulate the air, and systems that are too large won’t allow adequate airflow because the fan won’t move enough air through the system to reach each diffuser. All HVAC duct systems must be sealed properly to maintain pressure in the duct and must be securely mounted to minimize noise and vibration.
