What’s Internet Teleconferencing?

Internet teleconferencing allows communication over the Internet and falls into four categories: Internet telephone, video conferencing, web collaboration, and augmented reality conferencing. It can be cheaper than traditional teleconferencing and requires different software and hardware. Video conferencing existed before the Internet, while web collaboration and augmented reality conferencing are newer. Augmented reality conferencing is used for planning projects. Internet telecommunication can be faster and cheaper than traditional methods.

Internet teleconferencing allows people in different locations to communicate over the Internet. This style of teleconferencing can involve any type of telecommunication process, as long as it is transmitted over the Internet. Internet teleconferencing generally falls into one of four areas. Two of these, Internet telephone and video conferencing, existed before the Internet. The other two, web collaboration and augmented reality conferencing, exist thanks to the speed and data processing capabilities of the web.

Typically, the older two types use existing business infrastructure with minor adaptations, while the newer processes require new software and hardware to function. One reason that some individuals and businesses switch systems from traditional teleconferencing to Internet teleconferencing is cost. Transmitting information over the Internet can be cheaper than using existing phone lines or satellite connections.

Video conferencing existed even before the Internet. The basic setup requires a camera with a microphone aimed at all conference participants. In each location, a single person or group will watch a screen with all of the other parties’ live video feeds displayed. Before the internet, this was usually accomplished via a satellite connection. Now, video information is transmitted as computer data, which can reduce transmission cost and delay.

Web collaboration is a new type of communication born out of Internet teleconferencing. Unlike the first two types of conference, this one always takes place in front of a computer screen. Participants use specialized software that provides real-time audio and video capabilities. This style differs from video conferencing through the use of data transmission. During the conference, users can show presentation slides, transmit files, or allow multiple users editorial access to documents and plans.

Augmented reality conferencing is one of the newest forms of teleconferencing on the internet and requires new tools. Through the use of basic virtual reality software, multiple people can transport themselves to one place where they interact with their surroundings. Unlike most new styles of teleconferencing, augmented reality rarely allows users to see each other, as it can be taxing on systems. Instead, users look at a simulated area that often represents a real place. This type of conference is usually used to plan construction or similar projects – multiple people can be “on site” from all over the world.
Most forms of Internet telecommunication use basic software and pre-existing networks to do the same thing as telephone banks and satellites did in the past. Data transmission over the Internet can be faster and cheaper than with various telephone companies and video networks.
