Iridology is a non-invasive alternative healthcare approach that diagnoses health conditions by examining the iris. It is based on the concept that each organ corresponds to a section of the iris. While proponents see it as a useful alternative to conventional diagnostic measures, opponents note that there is no scientific evidence to support its effectiveness.

Iridology is an alternative healthcare approach intended to diagnose health conditions by examining the colored part of the eye, commonly known as the iris. The approach is based on the concept that each organ within the body corresponds to a section of the iris. By evaluating the current condition of this part of the eye, it is possible to identify the origin of the health symptoms currently affecting the individual.

The concept of iridology has been around for centuries. Eye examination as a means of identifying disease was common in ancient Greece. Writings from the 17th century record diagnosing diseases by examining the condition of the eyes. Along the way, an eye chart was developed that identifies how each organ within the body corresponds to a part of the iris. Ignatz von Peczely is considered by many to be the father of modern 19th century iridology. During the 17th century, Bernard Jensen was considered a leading light in procedure. Interest in iridology continued to expand during the 19th century.

The iris diagnosis process is not intended as a treatment strategy. Rather, the understanding is that by examining the various characteristics of the iris, it is possible to identify the presence of disease or malfunction of one or more organs of the body. It is not unusual for a homeopathic practitioner to also be trained as an iridologist, or to work alongside a person trained in iridology. Often, once a condition is diagnosed, a treatment program is developed that often includes dietary changes, vitamin and herbal supplements, exercise, and mental relaxation techniques.

People who promote iridology often see the approach as a useful alternative to conventional and sometimes invasive diagnostic measures. Iridology does not involve any kind of invasive procedure, which can be appealing to many people. Along with the ability to diagnose physical health problems, iridology is also considered by proponents to be helpful in identifying emotional, mental, and spiritual ailments.

Opponents of iridology note that the evidence for the effectiveness of this diagnostic method is mostly anecdotal. To date, there are no examples of structured testing conducted within a traditional scientific setting that demonstrates the ability to accurately diagnose disease by examining the iris.
