What’s IT outsourcing?

IT outsourcing involves hiring contractors to complete tasks for a company, including computer programming, web design, and network security. Benefits for employers include cost-effectiveness, while workers can choose assignments and earn more money. Some companies outsource overseas for even greater savings, but this is controversial.

Information technology (IT) outsourcing refers to hiring workers or contractors to complete tasks for a company. This is done as a less expensive alternative to hiring a full-time employee. There are several subcategories of IT outsourcing work that can be undertaken.

One job that can be outsourced is that of a computer programmer. While many companies may hire a full-time programmer to handle software development, certain web design issues and software training; IT outsourcing is generally much less expensive. Professionals can be hired on a per-job basis, which means that upon completion of each job, the company is no longer obligated to IT staff, and vice versa.

Often, web design work is also outsourced to companies or independent contractors. The designer can be hired to complete the website design and then on a job-by-job basis for routine maintenance, updates and other website related issues. IT outsourcing can also include those who are hired full time but as independent contractors. This means that the IT professional is still self-employed but has a contract with a company to complete certain ongoing tasks.

Other fields common to IT outsourcing are service professionals, computer repair technicians, and network security professionals. They can work for one company or several at a time to help customers with computer related problems. Most of the time, the person maintains working relationships with several clients at the same time.

There are many benefits for both employers and workers in forming an IT outsourcing relationship. The main benefit for employers is that outsourcing is often much more cost-effective than hiring a full-time employee. Things like health, vacation, maternity and sick leave benefits and other perks of being employed are not offered to independent contractors. Contract workers are also responsible for handling their own taxes since they are self-employed. Also, things like computers, office space, and supplies don’t have to be provided by the company.

IT employees also retain many benefits by performing tasks that companies have chosen to outsource. They are able to choose which assignments they wish to undertake and which they would like not to handle. For example, if they don’t like working with a particular client, they are not required to do so unless there is a pre-existing contract. Self-employed people are generally able to earn more money than employees because they are not constrained by the amount of work they can take on. Instead of earning a set salary, they can earn more or less by taking on more or less work.

Many companies benefit even more from outsourcing simple tasks overseas. This is a controversial topic for many, as jobs sent to other countries are not being filled by capable workers in the company’s home country. However, some countries have workers willing to work for much less than others, saving companies money. Every business and IT professional must decide what is ethical and fair for them in this situation. Many workers are unwilling to lower their prices to compete with foreign workers, and many companies prefer to hire in their home country.
