ITIL® V3 is a widely used best practice approach to IT service management. It originated in the UK and is now used globally. It consists of five volumes and focuses on the entire service management lifecycle. The first level of certification is the foundation exam, followed by three further qualification levels.
ITIL® V3 stands for Information Technology Infrastructure Library, version 3. It is a widely used best practice approach to Information Technology (IT) service management that originated in the UK, but ITIL® standards are now used by companies and public service organizations around the world. ITIL® is a registered trademark of the UK Office of Government Commerce (OGC).
The original version of the ITIL® software standards was developed between 1986 and 1992 as a series of booklets. The service management approach was then refined and developed further between 1996 and 1998, resulting in nine separate volumes covering different aspects of IT service management, including topics such as resource management, change control, scheduling disaster relief and financial management. ITIL® version 3, released in 2007, differs from previous versions in its focus on the entire service management lifecycle rather than an emphasis purely on best practice approaches for individual elements of IT service delivery.
ITIL® V3 consists of five main volumes: Service Strategy, Service Design, Service Transition, Service Operation, and Continuous Service Improvement. The final book is often considered the pinnacle of ITIL® V3 and focuses primarily on business process improvement in all areas covered in the first four volumes of the series. The objectives of the continuous service improvement module include improving the quality and efficiency of services, finding ways to work smarter within the confines of existing IT service models, and better meeting customer or customer needs. end user of the IT system or service being delivered.
The first level of the ITIL® V3 certification scheme is the foundation exam. The core course and exam cover the basics of ITIL® standards and aim to provide you with a solid foundation in the processes, concepts and terminology used in ITIL® best practices. The core exam is a prerequisite that all candidates must successfully complete before undertaking any higher level ITIL® qualifications.
Once a candidate has successfully passed the ITIL® Foundation exam, three further qualification levels are available: ITIL® Intermediate Level, which a candidate can achieve via the “Lifecycle Stream” or the “Capability Stream”; followed by ITIL® Expert; and finally ITIL® Master, the highest qualification available in ITIL®. For candidates who completed a core exam prior to the release of ITIL& V3, a transition exam is also available which provides a fast track from ITIL® V2 to ITIL® V3.
