What’s Jet Drilling?

Jet drilling can refer to the use of water or flame to cut metal or rock, as well as the creation of new drainage channels in wells. It is also used to divert drill strings in oil and gas wells for increased production.

The term “jet drilling” can describe the use of a powerful directed stream of water or fire in cutting or drilling. It can also be applied to another, distinct process: the creation of new drainage channels in wells. Each type of jet drilling has become increasingly common.
Waterjet drilling, or waterjet cutting, is when water is forced in a stream through an extremely narrow nozzle and fired at the target with sufficient velocity and pressure to cut metal. To make cutting easier, abrasive substances can sometimes be mixed into the water. This type of drilling is used in shops as an alternative to using metal drill bits, which can get hot or cause dull cuts when worn. The term “jet drilling” can also refer to a procedure better known as wash reaming, in which a chopping bit first pierces the earth and then soil samples are raised by flooding the hole with water. In jet drilling, water is superheated and used to cut rock.

Another form of drilling that uses heat is flame jet drilling. This method uses a hydrogen flame. As with waterjet drilling, an advantage of this method is that the equipment itself does not make contact with the surface to be drilled and therefore does not wear out easily. Unlike a jet of water, however, a jet of flame can cut very deeply into solid rock. This technology, along with its ability to penetrate deeper and deeper into the earth’s surface, has continued to advance steadily.

The term “jet drilling” not only refers to the use of fire or water in drilling, it is also the name given to the process of diverting a drill string in a new direction in upgrading oil and gas wells . Side and radial jet drilling are aimed at finding new routes to reach these resources and extract them. This is done by having new holes “jet out” to the side and/or within a radius of the original. Many jet drilling services offer their own jet drilling methods to enhance the production of existing wells.
