Kariega Game Reserve is a private animal sanctuary in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. This family-run nature reserve was created over several decades as the owners consolidated lands once owned by local farmers. Located in the Kariega River Valley through which the Kariega River flows, the reserve is home to many species of wildlife. Kariega Game Reserve is a popular tourist destination for visitors to enjoy a safari holiday. It is also the site of many research projects relating to African fauna, plants and the environment.

In 1989 Colin Rushmore bought 660 hectares (6.6 million square meters) in the Eastern Cape and named it Kariega Game Reserve. He added 20 basic log cabins and started conducting game drives for visitors. In 2002, Rushmore added Ukhozi Lodge, followed by the Homestead in 2006 and the River Lodge in 2007. These three properties are known for their luxurious accommodations, yet are designed to blend into their natural surroundings. Kariega Game Reserve also grew tremendously during this period and had grown to 9,000 hectares (90 million square meters) in 2007.

Visitors to Kariega Game Reserve have the opportunity to see exotic animal species in their natural habitat. Like other adventure safaris in Africa, visitors generate a lot of excitement when they see the “Big Five”. The Big Five is a term used to describe the five main species that can be seen on safari. These are lions, elephants, rhinos, buffaloes and leopards.

In addition to the Big Five, guests of Kariega Game Reserve have the opportunity to see dozens of other African species. They also spend time touring the area’s famous forests, native grasslands and classic bush lands. The Kariega River also offers guests a glimpse of marine life, including many species of fish.

Kariega Game Reserve takes visitors on two game drives scheduled each day to different areas of the reserve. In between these game drives, guests stay in one of the reserve’s luxurious lodges. Each offers a variety of activities and different dining options. Guests can also hike the local trails that Kariega Game Reserve deems safe or spend time fishing and bird watching. Finally, the Kariega Queen takes tourists on boat trips along the river at regular intervals.
