Jump starting is a method of starting an internal combustion engine, commonly used on motorcycles and ATVs. Electric starters have largely replaced jump starting, but off-road motorcycles often use kick starters to save weight. Kick starters can be difficult and even dangerous for some riders.

A jump start is a method of starting an internal combustion engine. This method of starting the engine is most commonly run on a motorcycle or ATV rather than an electric start system. In the past, most motorcycles featured jump start systems as the exclusive method of starting the engine, but the application of electric starters to motorcycles has largely replaced the jump starting method. Some motorcycles feature electric start and kick start; The pull starter is used if the electric starter fails for any reason. Motorcycles that are used exclusively off-road often forgo electric starters and feature pull starters only.

A kickstarter will have a metal arm with a pin at the end. This arm will fit snugly against the motor when not in use, pulling down when needed. The rider will place his foot on the footpeg and forcefully push his arm, thus starting the engine. It can take the driver several kicks to start the engine, especially if the engine is cold. Hot engines that have been used recently will start easier in most cases, sometimes requiring just a kick.

Off-road motorcycles often forgo electric starters because they tend to be heavier than starter mechanisms. An off-road motorcycle will exclusively use the kick-off arm, which can make it difficult to start the motorcycle during a race or intense competition. Saves significant weight, making the bike’s overall performance better and more manoeuvrable. Many motorcycles, both on and off road, that feature kick starters often feature compression release capabilities as well. This feature makes starting the engine easier by taking compression of the combustion chambers out of the equation at start-up. Otherwise, the starter mechanism will work against the force of the combustion when you try to start the engine.

Jump starters can be difficult and even dangerous for some people. Riders with knee or other leg problems may have difficulty initiating the start of the kick due to the resistance of the unit, and the kick-initiating arm can quickly pull back, potentially colliding with the rider’s leg. If the kick-off arm is faulty, it can fall out of its position next to the engine and interfere with the driver’s movements while driving. It is important to ensure that the kick starter works properly and that the rider should wear boots and other protective gear when using it.
