Kings Mountain State Park in South Carolina has hiking and equestrian trails, picnic areas, and a miniature golf course. It also features an open-air living history museum and two fishing and boating lakes. Accommodations include group cabins, RV sites, and camping areas.
Kings Mountain State Park is located just east of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the Piedmont foothills region of South Carolina. It is adjacent to Kings Mountain National Military Park National Park, a Revolutionary War battlefield memorial park. This park is located along the border between North Carolina and South Carolina. Originally built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s, Kings Mountain State Park is made up of beautiful nature hiking and equestrian trails, including including an open-air living history museum.
The park consists of hilly terrain surrounded by a zigzagging log fence around picnic and play areas and a miniature golf course. There are two nature walks and trails for visitors to enjoy the wooded foliage and wildlife. Additionally, the park offers equestrian trails for riders, shared with the adjacent national park. Dogs are allowed in the park if kept on a leash. Sheltered picnic areas for large groups are available by reservation or on a first come, first served basis if no reservations are made.
The open-air Living History Farm is a replica of a Piedmont Living History Farm built by the CCC; some buildings from adjacent properties in the Piedmontese foothills were transferred there. The park is maintained in a mid-1800s period style, including farm gardens, barnyard animals, and even barnyard cats. The Living History Farm includes barns and outbuildings. It also features a combined blacksmith and carpenter shop with blacksmiths, carpenters and a cotton gin. Guests can watch open fire cooking and demonstrations of farming skills from bygone eras.
Kings Mountain State Park has two fishing and boating lakes for guest enjoyment: Lake York and Lake Crawford. Jonboats, kayaks, or canoes are available for rent, and fishing may be enjoyed by those with appropriate South Carolina fishing licenses. Shore fishing is not permitted on either lake.
Accommodations at Kings Mountain State Park include group cabins with cafeterias and bathhouses. Recreational vehicles may use the gravel sites with water and electric hookups as well as nearby showers. There is a large camping area for tent campers with central water systems. Primitive equestrian campsites are also available. All cabin and camping accommodations must be reserved. Contact the park for information.
