What’s Low Smoke Halogen?

Low Smoke Halogen (LSZH) is a cable jacket used in fiber optic cabling and networking systems that does not emit toxic chemicals when exposed to heat or flame. It is popular in poorly ventilated or high traffic areas and is environmentally friendly. LSZH accommodates most standard types of cable connection and is more easily disposed of than conventional cabling.

Low Smoke Halogen (LSZH or LSOH) describes a type of cable jacket associated with fiber optic cabling and networking systems. Composed of the outer coating layer that protects fiber optic cables and lines, this material has been preferred for its safety features. Where other network cables may be insulated with polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyethylene, or thermoplastic urethane (TPU), low-smoke halogens have some advantages under extreme conditions. Under direct heat or flame, traditional materials can emit toxic chemicals, such as hydrochloric acid, which becomes hydrochloric acid when in contact with water. LSZH, on the other hand, does not emit such toxins, and thus is often used in areas with poor ventilation or a lot of human activity.

Halogens are represented by potentially toxic elements which include fluorine, chlorine and iodine. Often found in aviation, construction, and railroad applications, halogen-free or low-smoke halogen-type cables have gained popularity under government safety regulations for halogen-based technologies. The adoption of halogen-free legislation has motivated electronics manufacturers to ensure compliance using this technology. Lighter weight, environmentally friendly, low-smoke, zero-halogen products help preserve green practices. The material also allows for more space-efficient network configurations due to its smaller size.

Computer technology is commonly designed with flame retardants such as low smoke halogens. Many computers contain up to 27 potentially dangerous metals. Providing material for shielded and coaxial cables, low-smoke halogens are also found in other types of cables, such as multicore. This liner is made of polypropylene, which is very flame resistant and emits very little smoke. The absence of toxic gases makes this type of coating an attractive choice for engineers and technicians.

In order to protect people and equipment, network architects and engineers design their own systems by specifying these materials for installations. The absence of corrosive acid and gas emissions makes this type of cabling a popular choice for poorly ventilated areas and high traffic areas. These could include schools, shopping centers or hospitals. Different types of low-smoke and halogen wiring provide different characteristics, such as operating voltage and temperature ranges. As with other types, this cable is described by differences in flex and wet electrical values, along with conventional factors such as conductor and diameter characteristics.

Low Smoke Halogen will not ignite. It is more easily disposed of than conventional cabling and more easily meets regulatory compliance. This material also accommodates most standard types of cable connection, patching and transmission media, whether electrical, electronic or digital. It’s a jacket that not only protects your vehicle, but also your gear and people.
