MalaMala Game Reserve is a privately owned resort in Africa. The 33,000-acre (13,500 ha) reserve is bordered on both sides by Kruger National Park and Sabi Sand Wildtuin. An assortment of game, including lion, leopard and black rhino, pass through or live on the reserve. African elephants and Cape buffalo are also found in the area, making the reserve home to all of Africa’s “big five” wildlife. The reserve does not permit hunting, but instead offers prime viewing and photographic opportunities of African wildlife in its natural habitat.

There is a selection of accommodation on the reserve. The rooms and luxurious suites are decorated in an elegant safari style, from the fine leather upholstery to the fabric-draped four-poster beds. All guests of MalaMala Game Reserve have access to the private library, dining room and historic safari bar. The reserve also offers an observation deck, an infinity pool, and a gym. All rooms and suites offer wireless Internet access and cell phones.

Guests can choose from three levels of accommodations. MalaMala Game Reserve has several sections, or ‘camps’, each offering a unique experience. MalaMala Main Camp is the largest, with 18 bedrooms, and is closest to the main lodges on the reserve. The Sable field is more private than the main field. Its seven suites can be rented individually, or the entire field can be reserved for private functions.

Rattray’s on MalaMala is the most exclusive course in the MalaMala Game Reserve. This field consists of eight separate khyas or houses. Each khya has his and hers bathrooms, a private outdoor shower and a private heated plunge pool. Guests of this camp also have private verandas and bird gardens in each of the khyas. While children are welcome at the other two camps, children under 16 are not permitted at Rattray’s at MalaMala.

The reserve offers guided and unguided tours as well as its signature photo safaris. MalaMala Game Reserve also has a Junior Ranger Program, designed to provide guests’ children with memorable wildlife experiences. Depending on the children’s ages, they may receive a backpack filled with interactive wildlife gear, lessons on how to track animals, or a guided walking tour of the main facility with an instructor showing them how to identify native vegetation and insects. Several packages combine a stay in the reserve with other destinations such as Mozambique or Victoria Falls.
