Mechanical linkage uses rigid rods to operate devices, such as the throttle and gearbox in automobiles. It provides a greater level of control for the operator and can be designed with ball bearings for smoother operation. The operator can fine-tune the machine’s reaction by adjusting the linkage. It maintains human input and control in operating parameters.

Mechanical linkage is a form of linkage that uses rigid rods to operate a device instead of an electronically controlled method. The mechanical connection can come in the form of a hollow or solid or hollow rod. The throttle linkage on an automobile is typically mechanical, but some vehicles have a wire mechanism that works from a servo and an electronic activator.

The gearbox connection is usually to the mechanical version. Most manual gearboxes use a mechanical linkage to change gears. The advantage of the mechanical connection over that of the electronic or vacuum-controlled connection is the level of control the operator feels when using the device. The actual sensation of applying the throttle or shifting gears puts the feeling of control back in the operator’s hands. In many cases, the driver is able to control the vehicle much better when the feel of the vehicle’s response is placed back into the driver’s hands.

Many times the mechanical linkage is designed around a lever system. One instance where this is true is in the design of a mechanical clutch linkage in an automobile. By placing the pivot point in a bellcrank at a certain point, the pressure applied to the clutch can be greatly improved. By having a short arm and a long arm in the mechanical linkage, the law of physics takes over, thus creating leverage and allowing the very stiff clutch springs to be easily pressed and held.

Many mechanical linkage assemblies use ball bearings in the design for ease of operation. By placing a ball bearing assembly in the linkage, it is driven much smoother and easier than without it. This brings the link back in line with the drive cable’s less strenuous claims and much easier to use. Many mechanical linkage assemblies operate with little discomfort to the operator.

A mechanical linkage allows the operator to fine-tune the machine’s reaction by adjusting the linkage to a preferred setting. By fine-tuning the linkage, the tuner can choose the reaction time of any machine by simply lengthening or shortening the linkage. Lengthening the link will cause the machine to start a certain process sooner, while shortening the link will cause a slight delay in activating a certain process.

Technology continues to create advances that take human input out of the equation. The mechanical operation of the linkage maintains human input and control in the operating parameters of a given machine.
