Mid-adolescence is a crucial stage of development for teenagers, where they experience significant emotional, intellectual, and social growth. During this time, teenagers may become more critical of their physical appearance, experiment with drugs, alcohol, and sex, and question authority. They also begin to develop their own sense of right and wrong and plan for their future.

When a child is in their teen years, they are both physically and mentally transitioning from being a child to an adult. During this period there are several stages of development that children have to go through. These stages range from early to late adolescence. Mid-adolescence is the stage where the child is between the ages of 14 and 18. It is a period of significant emotional, intellectual and social development.

During mid-teens, puberty may have already ended or is nearing its end. This does not mean that children will have completely stopped growing or changing, although the growth rate does begin to change between genders. A middle-aged adolescent boy will continue to grow physically while growth in a girl of the same age group will begin to slow down.

In this stage of adolescence, children are often more critical of themselves in terms of their physical appearance. There is usually a greater need to be accepted by their peers and make friends. Parents may notice that their child has a heightened interest in makeup, fashion, diet, and exercise in order to improve her outward appearance.

Mid-teens is also a challenging time for parents or adults raising children within this age range. During this time children may be more confrontational or question authority more frequently. In some cases, they can become more reserved rather than confrontational. At this time they often become more independent, eager to express themselves as individuals capable of making their own decisions.

The desire for new, more adult experiences also plays an important role in mid-adolescence. Children may experiment with, or feel compelled to experiment with, drugs, alcohol and sex. Some children may begin to question or explore their sexual identity. Relationships with the opposite sex often become more important in terms of having a boyfriend or girlfriend. With these relationships also comes an increased interest in sexual interaction.

Intellectually, mid-teens is a time of forward growth. A child may start asking questions about more adult problems. He will begin to develop and act on his own sense of right and wrong. The future becomes more important when he starts thinking about his goals as an adult and making plans in terms of education. Mid-teens is also a time when most kids learn to drive and get their first real job.
