Monofilament line is a single fiber fishing line made by melting polymer beads and pushing the mixture through fine openings. It is the most commonly used type of fishing line and is also used for beading and sewing projects. High-quality lines are resistant to abrasives and some are designed specifically for ocean fishing. The line must be strong and solid enough to handle the force of a fish and should have the smallest diameter possible for the intended use. Color is also important, with different colors used for different fishing environments.

Monofilament line is a type of fishing line. Other types of fishing line are available, but monofilament is the most commonly used type of fishing line. It is also used for beading and sewing projects due to its strength and transparency.

Monofilament line is a single fiber line, which means it is formed into a single fiber or yarn. It differs from microfilaments, or fused lines, in that these types have multiple fibers fused into one. In the production of monofilament lines, polymer beads are melted and blended and the mixture is pushed through fine openings to create the line. The monofilament thread is then put into spools. The softness, flexibility and color of the line depend on the specific combination of polymers used.

High quality lines are also the most resistant. Premium nylon monofilament line has been popular since the 1950s as a reliable fishing line. It is often the most expensive type of fishing line as the additives in it make it resistant to abrasive materials such as rocks and barnacles. Saltwater can be especially abrasive on fishing lines, so some monofilament lines are designed specifically for ocean fishing.

If the line becomes damaged with small cuts made by abrasives, it could snap when a fish is on the line struggling to escape. Also, the line must be strong and solid enough to be able to handle the sudden force of a fish on the line. If the line is weak in any way, it may snap when a fish twists the line while suddenly spinning.

The most desirable type of fishing line is the smallest diameter strong enough for the intended use. If the line is too thick, it may not be cast easily. Also, fish are less likely to see a line if it is thin.
Color is another important consideration when choosing line as fish can see the line transparent in some areas such as in bottom fishing. In bottom fishing, the color of the line should match the color of the bottom, while in pole fishing, the line should match the color of the water. The monofilament line comes in colors like green for weed-filled water and heavily vegetated bottom areas.
