MrSID is a multi-resolution seamless image database that compresses and views raster graphics. Developed by LizardTech, it combines small images to create a solid large image and solves issues with opening and storing raster images.
MrSID is an image database that comes with different kinds of features. Properly known as a multi-resolution seamless image database, MrSID functions as an image viewer and compressor, and as a file format for raster graphics of a larger nature. MrSID’s basic capabilities are made possible by a configuration that takes a series of small image boxes and builds one large image.
Developed by LizardTech, MrSID was designed to make assembling these smaller images easier to manage and without the integrity issues found in similar applications. MrSID is able to combine smaller images in a way that makes the completed large image perfect. The end result is a solid image, rather than one that looks anything like an electronic jigsaw puzzle.
MrSID also solves one of the long-standing problems with raster imaging, which is the amount of time it takes to open the file in an image viewer. The image database has the ability to allow the end user to unpack the raster image one section at a time. Once a section is opened, the user can designate another section for unzipping, following this pattern until the entire image is displayed.
Another problem associated with raster images is the amount of storage space the images require. MrSID’s compression features also help minimize this problem. An image compressed using MrSID will take up much less storage space. Typically, a grayscale image compressed using MrSID will have a ratio of 20:1, while a color image can be compressed to a ratio of 50:1.
