What’s Multi-Factor Authentication?

Multi-factor authentication uses multiple forms of verification to protect information. Two-factor authentication is a common example, requiring a passmark or security question after entering a user ID and password. Biometric verification can also be used. MFA is important for online security and building access control.

Multi-factor authentication is an online security arrangement that uses several forms of verification before allowing access to protected information. The function of multi-factor authentication is very similar to single-factor authentication, but with one very important difference. Single factor authentication usually involves nothing more than entering a valid user ID and password. Multi-factor authentication will include the use of both of these forms of identification, but will also require additional credentials.

One of the more common forms of multi-factor authentication is called two-factor authentication. With this application, the end user will start the login process by entering the usual User ID and a password. Instead of gaining instant access to the application, the user will then be prompted to enter or confirm another type of data to verify identity. This second layer of security could be as simple as entering a so-called passmark, often stating that an image associated with the user is displayed. In some cases, the flag may be in the form of a security question established when login credentials are created.

Multi-factor authentication or MFA can work even in offline environments. For example, access to a secured building can be gained by first entering a numeric passcode, then undergoing some form of biometric verification. Verification could involve using a sensor to scan the fingerprints of the individual attempting to enter the space. If the fingerprints match the image on file and associated with the passcode, entry is allowed. Along with finger scanning, biometric verification can be conducted using voice recognition, an eye scan, or even a face scan.

The need for multi-factor authentication has become increasingly necessary as more people conduct transactions online and as crime rates have made it prudent to secure office buildings so that only authorized personnel can enter. While some people may become impatient with the extra steps before being able to access bank accounts or enter office space, using a security system such as multi-factor authentication is very important in the fight to prevent theft of identity and keep people safe.
