A “no vacation” sign indicates that a building has reached its capacity and has no additional space for people or storage needs. It prevents people from inquiring about availability and saves time for employees. The sign has evolved from a simple sign by the office door to larger neon signs. Even high-end hotels and guest houses use these signs.
The presence of a “no vacation” sign is a means of signaling to people in the immediate area that the building or buildings carrying the sign has reached its capacity and has no additional space for people or any type of storage needs. Most commonly, such a sign is seen on the exterior of motels and hotels, but other establishments sometimes make use of this type of sign, including depots and guesthouses.
The main purpose of a “no vacation” sign is to prevent people from entering premises and inquiring about the availability of space for rent or lease. From this point of view, the sign helps to minimize the time spent by people who need space for some reason and by employees who have other tasks to handle than informing visitors that there is currently no space available.
In the past, a motel “no vacation” sign was often displayed near the motel office, allowing anyone stopping by to rent a room to quickly determine that no rooms were available. Over time, the simple sign by the office door was replaced with larger neon signs that could be easily seen from the roadway. When rooms were vacant and available for rent, the sign was turned off, but if all available rooms were occupied, the sign was turned on to warn motorists that there was no reason to stop and look for accommodation.
Even high-end hotel chains sometimes make use of these signs. They are usually more discreet, sometimes located near the hotel entrance or reception. However, there are older hotels that sometimes even have a modest electronic sign placed at street level. These signs are often more subdued than the neon versions used by hotels and are often at eye level or slightly higher, making it easy for pedestrians to identify which hotels have available rooms and which do not.
Guest houses are another place where these signs are commonly employed. Shops of this type usually have a simple removable sign that can be placed near the main door or in a window overlooking the street. When rooms are available for rent, the landlord simply removes the sign from public view, placing it back in the window or only placing it by the door when all the rooms in the boarding house have been reclaimed.
