What’s Noisemaker?

Noisemakers are toys and instruments used to make loud sounds during celebrations. Types include graggers, tambourines, maracas, whistles, bells, horns, and clappers. They can be bought wholesale online and even made from household items.

You could technically define a noisemaker as a three-year-old boy who gets restless about having to go to bed, but in most cases, noisemakers refer to a variety of toys and simple musical instruments. They are specifically used for the purpose of making a lot of noise, often during celebrations such as those which occur at midnight on New Year’s Eve. Other special uses include the use of loud graggers on Purim whenever Haman’s name is mentioned. You’ll also find a variety of noisemaker types at sporting events, parades, and Carnival parties.

There are several types of noisemakers, not excluding the three-year-old ones mentioned above. The gragger, for example, is a small, portable stick with a rectangular-looking box at the top. When twirled in the hand, the box spins. The friction of the box rubs against the stick, making a loud percussive sound. A similar sound can be made by using two sticks, one with the ridges cut out, which when rubbed together create the friction sound. Alternatively, you can use the real percussion instrument, the fish or guiro, which is usually carved out of a large gourd or carved out of wood. In the middle section of the fish you will find a series of grooves; these when rubbed with a wooden stick produce sounds similar to the gragger.

Other percussion instruments that can be made inexpensively and referred to as noisemakers include tambourines, small drums, and maracas of various sizes. You can buy small drums on sticks with two balls connected by a string. These provide a good noisemaker when you hold them in one hand and use wrist action to quickly flip them from side to side.

Other variants of the noisemaker include small whistles, bells of many types, large whirlwinds or football horns, and clappers. Clappers are made of wood or plastic and have two hand-shaped tops which when shaken back and forth provide a clapping and banging sound. There are literally hundreds of different noisemakers available.

If you’re planning a party or event where you’ll want noisemakers, one of the best ways to buy them wholesale is online, especially if you need a large quantity. You can often buy them by the dozen, and most are only meant to last for a party or moment, with the exception of some percussion instruments. Choose a variety of different types to produce the most cacophonous sounds when noise is required. Loud people can be fun at children’s parties too; each child can be given a noisemaker in a gift bag for an impromptu parade.

If you’re short on cash and still want to make some noise, such as on New Year’s Eve, don’t forget the wonderful power of wooden pots, pans and spoons, as temporary noisemakers. Even a pot and her lid can be banged together for loud, joyful sounds as you crash in the new year for all your neighbors.
