What’s offline mode?

The term “offline mode” is used to describe being off the grid in the real world. While online communication has benefits, meeting offline can provide more nuance and honesty, especially in relationships. Programs and computers are also judged by their ability to work online, but offline mode may be desired for security reasons in some businesses.

So much is being done on the Internet today that society has had to find ways to describe things being done in the real world or in the “meat space.” The term that may most frequently be used to describe being off the grid is “offline mode” or simply offline. It is becoming common to ask for real-world meetings of various kinds offline.

While people can even meet face-to-face online via video conferencing, there are still some benefits to meeting offline. Sometimes when an offline meeting is suggested, it’s to continue conversations that occurred online. Also, not everyone has access to the latest technology for online communications and most people who use the internet for various communications tend to do so by sending things like emails to each other or chatting over text. Text-only communications can lack much nuance and tone, and completely lack facial expression and body language, which are key aspects of language.

Sometimes people meet online, such as in online dating, and decide to go offline at some point to pursue a relationship. This can have its risks, but it can be a truer form of improving a relationship. One difficulty with communicating exclusively online is that it makes it possible for people to represent themselves in very false ways. The online self can weigh anything, be any gender, and have any profession. In some cases, the online self does not match the offline person at all, and taking a dating relationship offline is a good way to find out if a person is being honest, although this should be done with due caution.

Offline mode should not refer to communications between people. It can also define the real computer and its programs. Just as many people now go online, programs can also be judged by their ability to work on the Internet. An average simulation game only played offline may not be as desirable as one that can be played online with various users. There is a lot of discussion about whether a program is useful if it doesn’t have an online mode, and if programs that work exclusively in offline mode are becoming obsolete.

Computers are also judged by their ability to connect to the Internet, and for most people, a computer’s functionality is greatly diminished if it cannot be connected to the Internet. This isn’t always the case. It is often recommended that parents not connect computers to the Internet in children’s rooms due to the possibility of children visiting unwanted websites or conversing with online predators.

Offline mode computers may also be desired in some businesses where security needs are stringent and concerns exist about theft of proprietary information. Some companies may have inter-office communications, but prevent computers from coming out of offline mode. Of course, computers are just one means of communicating via the Internet, and when a high level of security is required, companies can also restrict things like the use of camera phones or PDAs during working hours.
