Organic molasses is a natural sweetener made from certified organic sugar cane. It comes in three types, each with a different flavor, and can be used in cooking, baking, and as a sweetener for beverages. Organic molasses is healthier than refined sugars and artificial sweeteners and blackstrap molasses contains nutrients and minerals.

Organic Molasses is a syrup made from certified organic sugar cane. The sugar cane leaves are harvested, mashed and boiled, separating the sugar from the thick syrup and creating molasses. Molasses is a natural sweetener used for home cooking and by manufacturers of sweets and snacks. There are three popular types of molasses: the first, second and black molasses. Each type has a different flavor.

Manufacturers process and bottle organic molasses for use in cooking and baking. The syrup can be used in its pure form for a variety of purposes, such as sweetening beverages, adding flavor to cereals and oatmeal, and as a sweetener for baking and cooking. Molasses is also a common ingredient in prepackaged foods like granola bars and cookies. Organic pet bakeries often add molasses to dog treats and pet foods to give them a natural sweetness without adding harmful ingredients to the product.

The sugar splitting process creates three types of molasses. When pure brown sugar leaves are boiled, it produces raw molasses. Early molasses have the highest sugar content and the sweetest taste. Second molasses is produced when the leaves are boiled a second time. This type of molasses has a darker color and a slightly bitter taste.

Black treacle is produced when sugarcane leaves are boiled for the third time. Boiling the leaves the first couple of times removes most of the sugar, giving the black treacle a crisp, bitter taste. While this type of molasses doesn’t provide much sweetness, it has a rich flavor and dark coloration that can be used as a cooking or baking ingredient.

Some types of molasses contain sulfur. When sugarcane leaves are harvested green or in an immature stage, farmers treat the leaves with sulfur and sulfur appears in the final product. Organic molasses brands do not contain sulfur. Certified organic Famers allow the sugarcane to reach maturity and do not apply chemicals or other treatment agents to the sugarcane leaves prior to processing. As a result, consumers get a pure organic sugar cane syrup with no by-products or fillers.

Organic molasses is better for a consumer’s health than refined sugars, high in simple carbohydrates or artificial sweeteners, which contain chemicals and other additives. Blackstrap molasses has other health benefits as well, as it contains nutrients and minerals from sugar cane. This type of molasses provides calcium, iron and other minerals.
