Palmistry is an ancient art of fortune-telling that examines lines and bumps on the hand. The three main lines examined are the life line, heart line, and head line. The person’s temperament is correlated with the element of their hand.

Palm reading, more technically known as palmistry, is the art of telling the future or determining something about a person by looking at their palms. It is an ancient mystical art, with its roots deep in India’s past. In the modern world, it is one of the most common methods of fortune telling, along with astrology.
The earliest known text on palm reading was written by a Hindi sage, Valmiki, in the 3rd millennium BC. It was titled “Valmiki Maharshi’s Teachings on Male Palmistry” and expounded many techniques used to this day. The process then made its way to Egypt, Persia, Tibet, China and Greece.

It is ancient Greek palm reading, largely outlined by the philosopher Anaxagoras, that sets the stage for much of modern palm reading. Consequently, in many palm reading sessions, Greek mythological figures will be invoked as representing various parts of the palm, with that part of the palm reflecting characteristics associated with that god or goddess.

For example, the middle finger is said to represent Athena, and therefore logic and rationality. The tip of the thumb is said to represent Rhea, the goddess of the Earth, who defied her husband, and therefore the thumb is looked at for a clue as to a person’s willpower. The mound near the thumb is represented by Venus and indicates a lot about love. Other areas are said to be ruled by Vulcan, Mercury, Mars and Apollo.

Most palm reading traditions focus only on the shapes and lengths of various hand features. The two main features examined are lines and bumps. These lines are usually given names, such as life line or heart line, which indicate their meaning. The intersections of lines and bumps, the relationships between their lengths or widths, and the depths of the folds are all meant to tell the reader different things about the person or their future. In some traditions, other characteristics are also taken into consideration, such as the nails, the texture of the skin, the flexibility of the various joints and the patterns marked on the skin.

The easiest way to evaluate a hand in a palm reading session is to determine which of the elements it is associated with. Fire hands are generally rectangular, have short fingers, and have red or pink skin. Water hands have an ovoid palm, long, round fingers. Earth hands are broad and square, with thick, rough skin. Air hands are rectangular, have long fingers, and generally have drier skin. The person’s temperament is thought to be roughly correlated with the element of his or her hand, with fiery people having short tempers, high creativity, etc.

There are three main lines examined in a palm reading session: the life line, the heart line, and the head line. The life line runs from the crease between the thumb and forefinger down in an arc towards the wrist; it generally provides information about the person’s health, as well as about the main events that will take place in his life. The heart line runs across the top of the palm, from under the little finger to over the thumb; it reflects matters of romance, as well as general happiness or malaise. The line of the head runs wrinkled under the index finger to the opposite edge of the palm; indicates learning and thinking styles and can show whether a person is right-brained or left-brained.
