What’s Pickle Relish?

[ad_1]

Pickle-flavored relish is made with pickled vegetables or fruits and can be sweet, spicy, or savory. It is commonly served with hot dogs but can also be used in recipes or as a seasoning for meats. It can last for months unopened but should be refrigerated once opened. Other forms include piccalilli and gentleman’s relish.

Pickle-flavored relish or simply relish is a relish that is made with various spiced vegetables or fruits that are pickled for longer shelf life. One of the best-known forms of this condiment is probably the version made with cucumbers and widely served with hot dogs in many regions of the world; this style is so common that many people simply refer to it as a “flavor,” not realizing that there are other types of flavor available.

To savor the pickle, cooks chop up the fruit and/or vegetable of their choice and cook them briefly in a pickled spice blend. The cooked ingredients are then mixed with a pickling solution which typically includes salt, vinegar and sugar, then the relish is decanted into jars and subjected to a hot water bath to seal the jars. If handled with care and well boxed, it can last, unopened, for months or years; as soon as the jar’s seal is broken, however, it should be refrigerated and used relatively quickly.

Depending on the taste of the cook, the taste of pickles can be sweet, spicy, savory or spicy, and the spicy ingredients can include mustard seeds, bay leaves, cayenne pepper, celery seeds, onions, garlic, sweet peppers, hot peppers, spices, cloves and turmeric, among many other things. The vegetables used typically include cucumbers and may also include cauliflower, carrots, and other more exotic additions. Because the relish is designed to be served in small portions, some cooks make it very strong, to ensure that the flavor will carry.

The pickle relish can be paired with a wide variety of foods and can also be used in an assortment of recipes. For example, many tartar sauce recipes call for a touch of relish, and some people include relish in things like potato or tuna salad for extra flavor. On its own, the pickle relish can season meats, especially hot dogs and hamburgers, and it can also be layered in sandwiches or served as a side meal such as fish and chips.

Some notable forms for the pickle are the piccalilli, a popular British relish, and the gentleman’s relish, made with spiced anchovies, rather than pickled vegetables. Most markets carry an assortment of pickles condiments and sausages, a closely related food, and enterprising cooks can even make these perennial favorites at home, assuming they have experience in pickling.
