Pickleball is an outdoor sport that combines different rules of table tennis, tennis and badminton, using paddles similar to table tennis. It is played on a badminton court with rules similar to those of tennis. Pickleball uses a wooden racket and a plastic baseball punched with holes. This game can be played on any hard surface and has been for over 40 years.

The game is played with a net 36 inches (91 cm) high at the edges and 34 inches (86 cm) high in the center. A serve is made from behind one of the two backlines. Serves are performed below the belt and with an underhand stroke. The pickleball player to right serves first, and both players on one team serve before giving up to the other teams. Games are played to 11 points and sides are switched at each point.

Points are earned, as in tennis, when the ball is hit out of bounds or when the other team doesn’t fly back. The ball must bounce before being returned to serve and must also bounce before the second return. There is a seven-foot no-shooting zone on either side of the net, within which a player may not stand to volley or land after volleying.

Pickleball is popular because it’s easy to learn. With a wiffle ball, the speed of the game can be slowed down for beginners. The ball is easier to hit than a tennis or ping pong ball. The pitch is bigger and the game is facilitated by a short net. Players can play on a driveway, badminton court or all-purpose sports field. Pickleball is nationally popular in the United States in secondary-level gymnastics classes, YMCAs, and health and fitness centers.

Pickleball, while easy for beginners, can also turn into an intense competition for elite players. With a low net, a court smaller than a tennis court and a no-volley zone, the pace of the game can pick up with four skilled players. Many pickleball leagues around the country feature skilled players with high levels of competitiveness.

Pickleball was created in the Puget Sound area off Seattle, Washington in the 1960s. It was named for one of the co-creators’ dog, Pickles. The pickles, according to legend, would chase and retrieve the balls and hide them. The family began playing a game with Pickles ball. And so they named the game after the dog. Pickles’ co-inventor and owner, US Congressman Joel Pritchard, originally played the game as a family sport for entertainment. Over 20 years, however, the game has developed a standard set of rules and a following across the country.
