What’s Pressure Pipe?

Pressure pipes are designed to carry fluids, air, or gases at higher than normal atmospheric pressure. They come in various sizes and types made from plastic compounds or metals. Pressure pipes are used in industries such as petroleum, chemical processing, and agriculture. PVC-O is the most popular plastic pressure pipe product. The strength of pressure pipes is considerable, and their specific capacities determine their applications. PVC is the most widely used plastic pipe worldwide due to its durability, resistance to corrosion, and affordability.

Pressure pipes are a type of industrial pipe designed to carry fluids, air or other gases at higher than normal atmospheric pressure. It comes in a variety of sizes and types and is made from plastic compounds, such as nylon or rubber, as well as metals such as copper, tin, and stainless steel. Many plastic-based pressure pipe materials are also reinforced with a form of braided sheathing incorporated into the pipe material itself and usually made from fiber-reinforced cable or steel wire. This increases the hose’s ability to withstand high pressure failures and, at the same time, slightly reduces the flexibility of the hose depending on how the sleeving is braided and what it is made of.

The strength of pressure pipes compared to standard pipes can be considerable. For example, high-pressure steel pipe and pipe fittings can typically withstand pressures of 150,000 pounds per square inch, or psi (10,342 bar). In contrast, the pressure rating for ordinary steel pipe is between 10,000 and 25,000 psi (689-1,724 bar). One of the most popular plastic pressure pipe products is molecularly oriented polyvinyl chloride (PVC-O), which has a pressure rating of between 4,000-7,000 psi (276-483 bar). PVC-O is stronger than standard PVC pipes because the plastic molecules are oriented radially around the pipe during the heating and manufacturing process.

The specific capacities of pressure pipes, whether they are stainless steel, medium pressure pipes, etc., determine the applications. Common uses include transporting caustic chemicals and wastewater, high or low temperature fluids for heating and cooling, or compressed and toxic gases. Pressure tubes are also widely employed in industries where low pressure environments are required for pumping atmosphere from a vacuum chamber. If so, the pipes and fittings must sustainably withstand long-term losses from the constant weight of atmospheric pressure against its exterior, which is 14,696 psi (1,013.25 millibar) at sea level.

The greatest commercial demand for pressure hoses is in petroleum and chemical processing, with high pressure steel hoses being the standard in use. High pressure plastic pipes are most commonly used in consumer and agricultural water supply. Other uses include food delivery, geothermal energy systems and compressed air lines for a range of power tools and industrial equipment. Polyvinyl chloride is the most widely used plastic pipe worldwide, making it the third most commonly produced plastic. This is because it is easy to work with, generally resistant to corrosion, durable, and inexpensive.
