What’s Push Email?

[ad_1]

Push email delivers emails in real-time to a client’s device without manual extraction, while pull-oriented systems require polling. Frequent polling can cause delays and timeouts, making push email crucial for urgent professions.

Push email uses an email delivery system that has the real-time ability to send the email to the client as it arrives, rather than requiring the client to query and collect, or extract, emails manually. This technology is often used with smartphones. With a smartphone push email, the customer’s inbox is constantly updated with incoming mail without her intervention. These smartphones announce the arrival of new mail with an alert.

This type of mail delivery system differs from pull-oriented systems. Typically, when an email is sent, it arrives at the recipient’s Internet Service Provider (ISP) mail server, where it is held for collection, or it could instead arrive at a website server, if the e -mail is Internet-based. In both cases, the email remains on the mail server until the recipient uses an email program to poll the mail server using an email polling protocol, such as Post Office Protocol (POP3 ). If there is new mail, the email client downloads the emails to the client’s computer. The difference between this scheme and push email is that, with push email, the email is sent to the client without waiting for a poll.

Push email can be somewhat simulated by setting up an email client to frequently query for new mail. However, this requires your email client to be open and running, so it’s less efficient. Polling involves electronic handshaking between client software and the mail server. If the server is busy, the delay in completing the handshake can become longer, causing the client to time out.

Therefore, polling should not be set up so frequently that it causes premature timeout errors. To avoid this, a user should increase the delay between poll times. In many cases, a minute or two of delay between pull and push patterns might not matter, but in some cases a minute can make a big difference. Push email can be especially crucial for field reporters, stock market businesspeople, and other professionals for whom emails may be urgent. A minute late can mean all the difference when it comes to breaking a story, making money, or completing a crucial sale.
