Raw sugar cane is a plant used to make various sweeteners such as molasses and raw sugar. It is grown in warm climates and has been used to create sugar for at least five millennia. Raw sugar cane is difficult to find but can be purchased in stalks and chewed or sucked for its sweet juices.
Raw sugar cane refers to the plant used to make many varieties of table sugar and other sweeteners such as molasses and raw sugar. It is a plant of the genus Saccharum and there are several species grown around the world, especially in warm climates. Sugarcane is thought to have originally come from places like India, and the processes for creating sugar from the plant date back at least five millennia. The growth of raw sugar cane is often associated with the development of the New World, as sugar cane growth was extensively developed in certain tropical regions as Europeans actively colonized North and South America.
Part of the reason sugar cane is such an excellent plant for creating sugar is because it is very good at converting carbon dioxide into sugars using sunlight as an energy source (photosynthesis). This makes the plant extremely sweet with excess sugar which can be extracted by a variety of methods and converted into other forms of sugar such as sucrose. This also means that eating raw sugarcane, or at least nibbling on it, can be quite a treat.
It’s not always possible to find raw sugar cane, but when it is, it’s worth a try. Sugar cane is harvested in stalks that can be many feet tall, sometimes nearly 20 feet tall. They are not usually sold as raw sugar cane for consumption in these large stalks, and those who harvest the cane can cut them into pieces about half a foot (.15 m) long.
After purchasing the cane, people simply wash it, dry it, and start chewing and sucking. Due to its hard nature, raw sugar cane is not meant to be chewed and ingested. Instead, it is simply chewed or sucked so that the sweet juices it contains are released. Any pieces that break off in the mouth should be discreetly discarded, as the highly fibrous nature of cane makes it difficult to digest and potentially a choking hazard.
The biggest difficulty with raw sugar cane is finding a place that sells it. It may be very difficult to enter areas where sugar cane is not grown. In places where sugarcane is grown on a regular basis, it may be available at your local grocery store. Occasionally, specialty food stores will carry and ship it from other areas. The value of the crop, however, lies primarily in the ability to produce sugar, and raw sugar cane is usually not a hugely profitable crop by itself, but instead is a special item.
