Rigid insulation board is a hard insulation made of synthetic or natural materials used on exterior walls and foundations. It is durable, expensive, and provides superior insulation. It is commonly used in small spaces and as part of structural insulation board.

Rigid insulation board is a form of hard insulation. This insulation is typically a synthetic material such as polystyrene or a natural material such as fiberglass or rock. When used in a building, these types of insulation are common on exterior walls and as part of the foundation. Because they pack a great deal of insulating power into a small space, it is common to use rigid insulation boards in areas where there is little room for larger forms of insulation. Rigid insulation board also shares many characteristics of structural insulation board, although they are considered two separate methods of insulation.

Insulation is the protective layer between the inside and outside of a building. Prevents temperature equalization between the building and the environment, keeping buildings warm or cool when needed. Most forms of insulation are soft; they conform to the space in which they are used. These types of insulation range from fiberglass pillows to shaved cellulose.

In addition to the soft forms of insulation, there are several forms of rigid insulation board. These isolations are tough; they do not bend or conform to their environment. In general, these types of insulation are more durable, more expensive, or insulate better than soft insulation. The most common forms of hard insulation are Styrofoam, prefabricated fiberglass panels, and rock slabs.

In most buildings, the only areas that have rigid insulation board are the exterior walls and foundation. Because most forms of hard insulation are more expensive and provide superior insulation, it’s important to install them only in areas where temperature loss is very important. If these insulators were used inside a building, they would increase construction costs and insulate the rooms from each other. This could actually increase climate control costs as heat and cold could no longer bleed through the walls.

Along with these important areas, rigid insulation board is also used in small spaces. Because a rigid insulation typically provides as much insulation as a soft form in a significantly smaller space, it is common in confined areas. Commonly, these areas are linings for non-construction projects, such as in an in-ground pool or as part of a structural insulation board.

Structural insulation board uses rigid insulation board sandwiched between two pieces of structural material such as wood. The panels are manufactured in one piece, they will not detach. One side of the panel faces the exterior of a building, while the other side forms the interior wall. Unlike a normal building, there is no interior wall space. Using these panels it is possible to create a building without a load-bearing structure.
