Romantic fashion is feminine and evokes thoughts of romance. The historical era was between 1825 and 1845, featuring pointed “v” waists, large hats, and thin sleeves. Today, it consists of light colors, ruffles, lace, and flowers, emphasizing the female body in a demure way. The style can be worn alone or combined with masculine pieces.

Romantic fashion is clothing that evokes thoughts of romance and femininity. In fashion history, the romantic era of fashion was between 1825 and 1845. Among the different styles, some consisted of a pointed “v” waist, large elaborate hats, and increasingly thinner sleeves. Today, romantic fashion generally consists of light colors, ruffles, lace, and flowers. The emphasis of this type of fashion is to show off the female body in a demure way.

The height of Romantic era fashion was between 1825 and 1835. The waistlines of the dresses were a few inches above the natural waistline. Trimmings and padding were added to the hem of the skirt to give it more volume, however by 1835 skirts were transforming into a more flared shape. The sleeves started out big and billowy, morphed into a tight sleeve at the top and flowing from the elbow, then changed to a tight sleeve with added fabric at the wrist, and finally were fully tight.

While sombreros and big hats were popular during that time period, they are rarely worn today. The hats were full of decorations such as feathers, bows and ribbons. High-fitting hats allowed for the tall hairstyles of the day.

Today’s romantic fashion tends to lean more towards flowy dresses and pants than tailored shorts and pants. The colors are pastels, like light pink and soft yellow instead of blacks or browns. Floral prints are also a big part of this style. Some of the fabric type and style options include chiffon, lace, velvet, and eyelet. The cut of the clothes is wavy but still tends to accentuate the curves of a woman’s body.

Some of the accents that accompany romantic fashion are bows, lace, ruffles and ribbons. Ruffles can be anywhere on a garment from the entire front of a shirt to the entire length of a skirt. They can also accentuate the sleeves or emphasize the neckline. Lace can make up the entire garment or act as a highlight in a specific area, such as on the sleeves or the front of a dress.

Romantic fashion can be worn on its own or combined with more masculine-inspired pieces. For example, a woman might wear a ruffled shirt with a suit jacket. Another option is to pair romantic-style clothing with darker pieces, like a pink floral dress with black heels. With such a wide range of clothing options that have a feminine and romantic feel, it’s possible to put together an outfit that really highlights an individual’s style.
