The word comes from the Latin “to write” and many scriptures are some of the oldest written texts in their respective cultures. Scriptures can contain conflicting or confusing information and are treated differently by different religions. Many religious followers memorize specific passages, which is an expression of devotion and ensures knowledge is passed on.

Scripture is a noun used to refer to writing with religious significance, or to passages from a sacred text. Many people specifically use it to refer to the Christian Bible, although most other religions have their own unique scriptures. Religious texts are an important part of religious practice in many religions, as they set forth the history and precepts of a religion. Many religious followers keep copies of scripture for religious inspiration and direction, and some theologians specialize in scripture so they can argue and argue points of religious faith.

The word comes from the Latin scriptus, “to write”. Many scriptures represent some of the oldest written texts in their respective cultures, suggesting the importance religion has had in human life for thousands of years. It is believed that one of the oldest scriptures in the world is the Rigveda, one of the most important texts of the Hindu religion. By convention, the title of religious scripture is usually capitalized, out of respect.

The author of the scriptures can vary; in many cases, it represents a collaborative effort by a group of holy individuals or religious authorities. In some cases, scriptures are said to come directly from a deity, while in other cases, scriptures may be written by or about an important religious figure. In Buddhism, for example, many sacred writings document the Buddha’s teachings, along with his life. Scripture can sometimes contain conflicting or confusing information, due to the authors of the group and because beliefs can evolve over time.

Different people treat scriptures in different ways. For example, Muslims consider their holy book, the Koran, to be sacred. Abuse of the Quran is considered abuse of Islam and devout Muslims always treat their Qurans with respect. In some religions, access to religious writings is controlled, and only close initiates are allowed to see some religious texts, while in other religions, sacred writing is widely distributed. Christians, for example, often share copies of the Bible or Bible passages with others in hopes of educating them in Christianity. This, however, is different from an earlier period in Christianity when the Bible was only available in Latin and accessible to a limited number of people. Many religions have realized the value of translating their sacred texts so that people around the world can read them.

Many religious followers memorize specific passages of scripture. These passages are often held to be particularly important or may carry useful objective lessons for religious followers. Memorizing the scriptures is also an expression of devotion and ensures that knowledge of the scriptures is passed on even when the texts are not readily available. Recitation of passages of scripture can also be part of religious practice in some beliefs.
