Mastic sealant is a pliable sealant used in construction and home projects. It adheres to most materials, is waterproof, and includes UV blockers. It has a smooth exterior and is best applied in thick applications. It should be checked and replaced after five years.

Many projects require some type of sealant to join one surface to another or to protect the area it is being applied to. In some cases, it’s best for the sealant to remain pliable even after it dries. Mastic sealer is typically good for this type of project, as it can bend and flex while maintaining a lasting bond for years.
The mastic sealant adheres to almost all materials. Common types that it works especially well with include wood, glass, aluminum, concrete, marble, steel, and duct board. It is often used in construction projects, such as connecting windows to structures. It can also be used in home projects including sealing the area around bathtubs and filling cracks in various types of masonry. Caulk is also often applied to roofing, brick structures, and even cars and boats to keep them free of dust.

The combination of features of this type of sealant sets it apart from others. It is known for its distinctively smooth exterior, while retaining a plastic, rigid shape underneath. Most users find that there is no need to prime the area they are applying caulk to, as the thick paste goes on smoothly. It can be applied outdoors as it is waterproof, resistant to both low and high temperatures and often includes ultraviolet (UV) blockers to ensure the sun does not weaken it. It also works well with metals, unlike some sealants, because it doesn’t usually corrode them over time.

Despite the many positive characteristics of the mastic sealant, there are some drawbacks. For example, while remaining quite flexible, it should not be applied to joints that will frequently be moved very far. Putty lining usually resists some pressure, but is not meant for extreme joint movement. It’s also usually best in thick applications, such as in large gaps and cracks, rather than thinner areas.

Regardless of where the caulk finish is applied, there are a few things to remember about this liquid sealant. While the area being treated may not need to be primed, it should usually be clean and dry, just as most sealants require. It usually lasts about five years, so it should be checked and replaced after that time to make sure it’s more effective. Caulk sealer is usually sold in tubs or tubes and is typically best applied with a caulk gun.
