The threads are part of the advanced flexible reusable surface insulation. The use of silica fibers reduces the weight of the insulation and can cope with the thermal load encountered upon re-entry.

Optical filaments are also made of silica fibers. Optical filament transmits light and is very thin, about as wide as a single strand of human hair. These strands form the foundation of optical fibers, which allow data to be transmitted at higher data rates and over very long distances. These elements are frequently used in telecommunications.

Other applications of optical fibers include imaging for surgical procedures and as sensors. One surgical application is an endoscope. This instrument is made up of bundles of silica fibers and is used to inspect the inside of the body.

The wire can be used to connect a sensor to a measurement system. In some cases the silica fiber is the sensor. No electrical power is required to operate sensors made from this material. Due to its small size it can be placed in places that are difficult to reach or dangerous for humans.
