Situation analysis is the process of evaluating relevant factors associated with a particular situation. It can be used for discovering flaws in a design or projecting potential outcomes. It is commonly used in marketing and internal procedures, and a SWOT analysis can be used to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.

Also known as situational analysis, situation analysis is the process of identifying and evaluating all the relevant factors associated with a particular situation. This type of approach can occur as a means of discovering something that is not working properly within a design or production process, or as a way to project the potential result of an action, given the circumstances that prevail at the present moment. When used effectively, the situation analysis process can minimize financial losses, increase marketing efforts, and generally enable you to meet and even exceed project expectations.

A common application of situation analysis has to do with the marketing process. Here, the emphasis of the process has to do with finding the key factors that determine the success or failure of a given marketing campaign. In order to maximize the campaign’s potential, marketers will consider the specifics of their intended customer base and evaluate what methods can be used to reach those customers with the best results. The cost of goods or services sold to consumers is also scrutinized, as the idea is to earn a profit from selling those products. Finally, the marketer will carefully examine the competition and determine what can be done to induce consumers to distance themselves from competitors and instead prefer the products marketed in the campaign. This process is often referred to as the “Three Cs” and can be applied to any type of marketing plan.

Situation analysis also works very well when looking at internal procedures within a company. For example, if the cost of production is higher than management should be, examining the situation closely can provide clues about what can be done to reduce the overall cost. As part of the analysis, factors such as labor, the cost of raw materials, the efficiency of any equipment used in the manufacturing process, and even the cost of packaging will be looked at. If done correctly, the analysis will identify all areas where improvements can be made and what effect they will have on the overall cost of production.

One form of situation analysis that is commonly used in many different situations is known as a SWOT analysis. With this model, the goal is to identify and evaluate all the strengths, areas of weakness, potential opportunities and possible threats associated with a given project or process. This basic approach can be used for everything from rethinking operational processes to gaining a competitive advantage in an aggressive marketplace.
