Six Sigma certification is awarded to individuals or corporations trained in the quality improvement program developed by Motorola. Certification levels include green belt, black belt, master black belt, and champion. It is more commonly found in large corporations due to the dedicated roles required for implementation.

Six Sigma certification is the endorsement issued to individuals within a corporation trained in Six Sigma or the corporation itself using the methodology. The quality improvement program developed by Motorola in the 1980s and is used by many companies, and certification is awarded upon completion of a training program offered by several schools. For individuals, Six Sigma certification lends martial arts classifications: champion, master black belt, black belt, and green belt.

Green belts are workers trained in mechanics and perform most hands on work. They must demonstrate the ability to understand the value and processes involved in Six Sigma certification. Green belts will work under black belts, but may not be assigned full-time to the project.

Black belts are trained to be able to explain the philosophy and principles of Six Sigma and are called upon to lead specific projects on a full-time basis. In addition to the knowledge that green belts possess, black belts are required to master system applications to create and modify projects. They are usually assigned to spend 75% or more of their work schedule on the project they are assigned to.

Master Black Belts are individuals with additional experience and training to oversee various projects or to serve as a Black Belt trainer. This Six Sigma certification is more involved in statistical analysis and developing the procedural elements of a project. Master Black Belts can oversee various projects and the Black Belts assigned to them.

Champions are usually designated by the company employing the Six Sigma program and are responsible for overseeing all projects involved. They are usually black belts chosen by management based on experience and education. While Six Sigma champion certification is offered by any number of bodies, formal criteria for this certification do not yet exist.

Six Sigma was extremely popular as a concept in the 1990s, with the success of Motorola, Honeywell and General Electric in using the process to add billions to their bottom line. It doesn’t lend itself very easily to formal implementation in small and medium-sized companies, as the high-ranking belts and champions are completely dedicated to their role in the program. Therefore, positions that require Six Sigma certification are usually found in large corporations or organizations.
