Slane Castle is a historic castle in Ireland, located in County Meath. Situated on 1,500 acres (607 hectares) within the Boyne Valley, its construction is believed to have begun in 1785, by order of Baron William Burton Conyngham, and was first occupied by his grandson Henry Conyngham, who eventually became the 1st Marquess of Conyngham. Much of the castle has been rebuilt and restored and serves as a popular tourist attraction and event venue, complete with banquet halls, amphitheater and overnight accommodation. The castle is also known for its annual concerts and its own brand of Irish whisky.

Surrounded by dense forests, Slane Castle Estate offers pastoral views across rolling meadows and valleys reaching to the edges of the River Boyne. This idyllic setting is probably the main reason why the castle attracts thousands of tourists every year. According to some travel and entertainment experts, it is one of the most well-maintained castles of historical significance in all of Europe. Unlike many historic buildings, which are often restored with government funds, Slane Castle has been restored mainly with private donations.

During the 1980s, Slane Castle rose to prominence as a rock concert venue and has hosted concerts by well-known bands such as U2, The Rolling Stones and Queen over the years. The open-air concerts are held in the estate grounds surrounding a natural amphitheater. Attendees typically travel from all over Europe and the United States, and typically 75,000 to 100,000 guests show up for these annual events.

Slane Castle has also become famous for its own brand of Irish whisky, which is said to be a smooth blend of grains and single malts. The whiskey was chosen by the Conyngham family, who said they spent more than three years of sampling before deciding on the blend. Before being bottled, the whiskey is first matured in aged oak for a minimum of four years. The castle hosts “tasting tours,” where guests are invited to tour the castle and sample various flavors of whiskey along the way.

Like many historic castles in Europe, Slane Castle has become a popular venue for weddings and other special events. The typical wedding package includes the exclusive one-day rental of the entire castle and park. During this time, guests have access to all of the castle’s amenities, including banquet halls, ballrooms and private suites for overnight guests. Services such as catering and cleaning are provided by the castle staff.
