German spaghetti is a dessert made by pressing light-colored ice cream through a potato scoop onto whipped cream, topped with strawberry sauce and brownie scoops. The ice cream should be slightly softened before use, and toppings can include chocolate donuts or whole strawberries. Other variations use different sauces or fresh fruit medleys.
From apple strudel and Bavarian cream to Black Forest cake and Kreppel jelly donuts, Germany offers a wide range of desserts that have spread all over the world. German spaghetti, however, has largely remained a native phenomenon. It is not a complicated dish to prepare. A light-colored ice cream is pressed through a potato scoop or specialty spaghetti maker onto a bed of whipped cream, then topped with strawberry sauce or jam and even brownie scoops or donut holes to resemble an over-the-top mound of sweets spaghetti and meatballs.
Ice cream, usually vanilla or nutty in flavor, isn’t ready to go through the richer until its texture is malleable, but slightly softened. Putting it in the refrigerator for 15 to 20 minutes should produce the desired effect. While the ice cream is softening, a serving dish and the richest should chill in the freezer.
Before serving spaghetti, chefs also need to prepare the toppings. “Meatballs” can be made with chocolate donuts or brownie batter. Others just use whole strawberries cut into perfect spheres. Additionally, a strawberry sauce is made by heating strawberry jam and a few strawberries — whole or in pieces — over medium heat, reducing them slightly while adding a little agave nectar or simple syrup for extra sweetness. Once these ingredients are prepared and the ice cream is the right consistency, the most characteristic element of the dish, the “noodles”, are ready to be made.
Most start the spaghetti process with a generous scoop of whipped cream in the middle of the cold plate. Then, the ice cream is pressed into the potato richer and squeezed into noodles that descend onto the cream, enveloping it completely. After a few minutes, the chilled wrap will harden the whipped cream texture, making it an integral part of the dessert.
After allowing the sauce to cool a little, so as not to melt the ice cream too quickly, it is poured over the pasta and meatballs. Some attempt to give the dish even more realism by shaving over the white chocolate just before serving, which resembles grated parmesan. This doesn’t mean spaghetti marinara is the only model for spaghetti. According to the German website All Things, one Schokoladen spaghetti uses chocolato sauce instead of strawberry, and another version uses a fresh fruit medley rather than just red-colored fruit.
