The King of Hearts is the only king without a mustache in an American deck of cards, possibly due to its association with purity. Playing card designs vary across cultures.

In an American deck of cards, the King of Hearts is the only king without a mustache. The King of Spades, Diamonds and Clubs all share the same facial feature of a noticeable moustache. The reasoning behind this subtle distinction is debatable. It is argued that diamonds, clubs and spades can be linked to the corruption of wealth, war and death; all apparently contaminated. It is because the heart is considered a pure, unambiguous and open organ that the King of Hearts appears clean compared to the other suits in a deck. There is also some belief that the clean-shaven King of Hearts was actually just a copy error where the mustache was unintentionally removed. Playing card design differs drastically between cultures, with US, British, French, Russian and German playing cards having drastically different images for all courts.
