What’s stadium seating?

Stadium seating provides a better view of the central point of focus from all seats. The design uses an upward slope with aisles for easy access. Wheelchair accessible seating is available.

Considered essential in most sports, performing arts and movie theaters, stadium seating is designed to provide a better view of the central point of focus from all seats than other seating options. The stadium seating arrangement uses a floor plan designed with an upward slope that provides a slight elevation for each row of seats as the number of rows expands away from the central area. The slight degree of elevation allows people seated near the rear of the structure to still see the central area clearly, without the view being obstructed by the heads of other attendees.

There are several designs of stadium seating in common use. Generally, all forms of stadium seating have aisles separating the seating sections. Aisles allow for easy access to seats across all rows, making it much easier for people to find seats and settle in for the event. The floor itself can be built in levels, with tiered places marked on each level. In other situations, the tiers can accommodate stationary chairs. Modern baseball stadiums tend to be built with tiered seating that includes chairs with backs and armrests, while many football stadiums make use of simple tiered grandstand-style seating that is marked on the tier itself. This form of stadium seating is sometimes referred to as step seating, as you can step up and down the seats, as well as in the aisles.

Aisles in stadium seating may be constructed with steps, while others are simply sections of pavement that slope gently upwards. The slope-up method is most common with stadium seating in movie theaters, concert halls, and live theaters, while the stepped method predominates in sports arenas. Either way, most venues today offer specially reserved sections for patrons who use a wheelchair or who are otherwise unable to move easily up and down stairs.
