Styrofoam is a Dow Chemical Company product created in 1941 and used for wartime and construction applications. It is often misused to refer to generic foam products. Styrofoam is also popular for crafts and home decor due to its easy cutting, lightweight, and water-resistant properties. It is also 100% recyclable.

Styrofoam Brand Foam is a proprietary product of the Dow Chemical Company. In 1941, laboratory experiments produced polystyrene foam. The Dow Chemical Company was able to patent this technology and gave it its current name. Styrofoam is moisture resistant and unsinkable, making it an attractive choice for building six-person rafts in 1942 for the US Coast Guard. The US Coast Guard and Navy were able to find additional wartime applications for the new Dow product, and even more uses were found in the late 1940s.

The term is often used to refer to coffee mugs, coolers and packaging material. However, these items are just generic foam and none have ever been made with real Styrofoam. Decades of misuse of the word have caused the everyday meaning of the word to refer to these various materials. One important difference is that true Styrofoam is light blue in color, while other generic types of foam are typically white.

In 1949, Styrofoam was used to insulate roofs and later used to insulate the underside of highways in 1966. The technology that created the foam has been continuously tested and improved over the years. Eventually, it was used to insulate the foundation in the 1970s. During the 1980s and 1990s, the Dow Chemical Company continued to sell its popular products around the world. After the turn of the century, the chemical company Dow further improved their product by making it resistant to termites.

In addition to its wartime and construction applications, Styrofoam is also popular for crafts. There are many ways to work with craftsmen, such as cutting, painting, gluing, sanding and sculpting. It is also used for home decor and floral designs. For more intricate designs and designs, the foam can be cut with cookie cutters, curled and used as a base for textured projects.

There are many benefits for home and flower designers and crafters to use Styrofoam in their projects and designs. It cuts easily and stays true to shape and size with no gaps or wholes throughout the product. Since the foam is closed cell, it does not absorb water. It’s also lightweight, handy, reusable, and holds its shape even when wet. Another common misconception is that Styrofoam is not recyclable. It is true that this foam is not biodegradable; however, it does not contain chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and is 100% recyclable.
