Syon House, the London home of the Duke of Northumberland, has a 400-year history and 200 acres of gardens. It was built on the site of Syon Abbey and has been renovated by famous designers. It offers tours, event rentals, and is a popular filming location.
Syon House is the London residence of the Duke of Northumberland. The property has a long history and has been in that family for over 400 years. Tours of the house and its 200 acres (800,000 square meters) of gardens are offered to the public, and Syon House can also be rented as a wedding or corporate event venue, as well as a film or television filming location.
The site on which Syon House is built was originally occupied by Syon Abbey. During the reign of King Henry VIII, England seceded from the Catholic Church and the abbey was dissolved in 1539. The estate became the property of the king and was held by a number of aristocrats before becoming the property of Henry Percy, 9th Earl of Northumberland, in 1594.
In 1750, the house became the property of Sir Hugh Smithson, after he inherited it through his marriage to Elizabeth Seymour, Percy’s heiress. The Percy name had died out due to lack of male issue, so this marriage revived the family name. In 1766, Sir Hugh Percy, Earl of Northumberland was given the title of 1st Duke of Northumberland. The Percy family still hold the Dukedom of Northumberland and continue to hold Syon House as their London home.
The estate has been renovated, inside and out, by the 1st Duke and Duchess of Northumberland. They commissioned the service of renowned designer Robert Adams to redesign the interiors and Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown was hired to design the extensive gardens. The results of the renovation of Syon House made Adams and Brown well known in all respects. Today Syon House retains the style and architecture that was popular with 18th century English royalty and gentry.
Guided tours of Syon House and its gardens are available to the public for a fee. The grandeur of the estate, and the fact that it is an excellent example of an 18th century English manor house style, has also made it a popular filming location. A number of television programs and theatrical films have been filmed within the house and its grounds.
In addition to tours and use as a film location, Syon House can also be rented for private events. Each year the estate hosts numerous weddings and corporate events. Events can be held both inside the house and at different locations within the park.
