What’s Teflon® tape?

[ad_1]

Teflon® tape, also known as PTFE tape, is used in plumbing to seal connections and prevent leaks. It is flexible, strong, and available in different colors for different types of piping. The tape is not adhesive, easy to use, and designed for tapered threads. It is a useful tool for quick fixes, but gas leaks should be handled by professionals.

Teflon® tape is a specialized type of tape used in plumbing systems to tightly seal connections, ensuring pipes don’t leak. This tape is also referred to as poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) tape, where “Teflon®” is a trademark of the DuPont company. It’s available at most hardware and home improvement stores, usually in the plumbing section, and is a standard part of the toolkit of people who do any type of plumbing job.

PTFE is a very interesting substance. From a hydraulic standpoint, it is important to note that it is very flexible and has immense tensile strength. When Teflon® tape is used to wrap the threads around a pipe, the tape acts almost like a putty, filling the space and preventing leaks. While you can use plumbing putty for tasks like this, Teflon® tape is quicker and easier, and often much neater as well.

Typically, PTFE tape is white, as this is the natural color of the substance. Some companies produce color-coded PTFE tapes, with different colors designed for different types of piping. Teflon® tape used for gas plumbing, for example, is thicker to prevent gas leaks and can be coded blue or yellow. The tape is not adhesive, tends to stick with pressure but is easy to move and reposition.

This tape is designed for use in pipes with tapered threads. Conical tubes are ideal for making an airtight seal because the conical design creates a wedge effect, sealing the tube neatly so nothing can escape. To use the tape, a length is wrapped around the male or threaded end of the hose, then the female end of the hose is connected. It is important to ensure that the Teflon® tape does not overlap the end of the hose, as this could cause problems in the future, as the tape could block the hose.

Teflon® tape is a very handy thing to keep around the house. While a plumber will be consulted to fix a problem, the tape can be used for a quick fix to keep things contained until the plumber arrives. People should pay close attention to gas pipes, as gas leaks can be quite dangerous and should be dealt with by professionals. If you suspect a gas leak, turn off the gas and call a gas professional immediately.
