The American Dietetic Association (ADA) was founded in 1917 in Cleveland, Ohio, to help the government during World War I by preserving food and improving the health of Americans. Today, it is the world’s largest organization of nutrition professionals with over 68,000 members, including Registered Dietitians, Dietetic Technicians, researchers, educators, and students. The ADA’s mission is to empower members to be the nation’s food and nutrition leaders and to optimize the health of the nation through food and nutrition. They accomplish this through various means, including maintaining a website with information and position papers for the public, accredited professional education programs, producing publications, hosting conferences, and administering the American Dietetic Foundation. The ADA has two main offices in Chicago, Illinois, and Washington, DC, and a Political Action Committee dedicated to supporting pro-nutrition candidates for federal office.

The minimum educational requirement for registered dietitians is a bachelor’s degree. Registered Dietitians require a minimum of an associate’s degree. Courses must be approved by the American Dietetic Association, as the government recognizes their role in the educational process through the Accreditation Commission for Dietetic Education (CADE). CADE is the accreditation agency for educational programs for dietetics professionals.

The ADA is governed by a Board of Directors, which is comprised of national leaders in food, nutrition and health. The Association’s mission is “to empower members to be the nation’s food and nutrition leaders.” His vision is “to optimize the health of the nation through food and nutrition.”

The American Dietetic Association accomplishes its goal of improving the nation’s health through various means. It maintains a website with information and position papers for the public, with special content available only to members. The ADA also has accredited professional education programs through CADE. They produce a series of publications, the most visible title of which is the Journal of the American Dietetic Association. This periodical is a monthly publication filled with peer-reviewed articles from dietitians and practitioners. During the month of March, which is National Nutrition Month, the Association provides the public with information, programs, and services. Finally, each fall, the ADA hosts a Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo during which educational materials and speakers address prevalent health issues facing Americans.

The Association also administers the American Dietetic Foundation, a public charity that aims to fund the future of dietetics through research and education. They have a special focus on promoting a healthy weight in children and decreasing the prevalence of childhood obesity.
