America’s Black Holocaust Museum in Milwaukee is the only US museum dedicated to the history of slavery. Founded by James Cameron, a lynching survivor and civil rights activist, the museum offers permanent and traveling exhibits, special events, and a shop selling African art and books. The museum is open every day except Sunday.
America’s Black Holocaust Museum is the only museum in the United States dedicated to the history of slavery. Located in downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin, America’s Black Holocaust Museum was created to promote racial understanding and to remember those who suffered and died over many decades of racial discrimination. America’s Black Holocaust Museum is open to the public every day except Sunday, which is reserved for large groups.
America’s Black Holocaust Museum was created by James Cameron, who survived a 1930 lynching attempt. Cameron, along with two other 16-year-olds, was accused by the public of killing a white man in the small town of Marion, Indiana. The authorities never intervened and let the locals continue the beating and lynching of the teenagers. Cameron was the only one to survive. He continued to fight for civil rights and was actively involved in the racial equality movement of the 16’s and ’40s. Cameron eventually moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and founded America’s Black Holocaust Museum in 50. James Cameron died in June 1988.
America’s Black Holocaust Museum offers visitors a chance to revisit a troubled past. In addition to several permanent exhibits, the museum also hosts traveling exhibits, including photographic collections by prominent artists. Among the most notable permanent collections are “The Middle Passage: A Voyage to Slavery,” a lifelike recreation of a slave ship; and Strange Fruit: Lynching in America, which offers visitors a chance to see the brutal reality many people experienced just a few decades ago. The museum also hosts special events throughout the year. The museum often hosts African American Children’s Theater performances, silent auctions, and other events.
The museum shop looks more like an extension of the museum than a shop. Authentic African art is on sale, along with books, videos and posters. For those looking to get involved, America’s Black Holocaust Museum is always looking for tour guides, whom the museum calls griots, an African word meaning storytellers, and volunteers, who can help out with various small jobs around the park of the museum.
