One of the easiest ways to visualize the celestial sphere is for a person to visualize the Earth as a whole. From the north and south poles, lines can be extended outward to create new north and south poles within a larger sphere. The Earth’s meridian and equator can also be extended, to create a celestial meridian and equator, which creates a simple representation of how an observer on Earth sees distant objects. Various celestial bodies can then be positioned on the celestial sphere to indicate their perceived position from the Earth.

Creating an imaginary celestial sphere makes it easier to study and discuss celestial bodies. Astronomy students understand that the actual positions of various stars and planets are in no way related to how they are perceived by the Earth, but such positions in three-dimensional space are often difficult to understand and use. A single celestial sphere can also be created for a particular observer, by creating a polar point directly above him or her, with a meridian running north and south from this point. The personal sphere uses an equator that represents the observer’s position on the surface of the Earth, and while it is possible to create a complete sphere, only half of the sphere is visible to the observer at any given time.
