The center of gravity in astronomy is the point at which celestial bodies are in equilibrium. Both objects orbit the same point, which can be off-center within the more massive body. The size discrepancy between orbits increases with the difference in mass. The centroid can be found by calculating the distance between the more massive body and the centroid.

In astronomy, a center of gravity is the center of mass of two or more celestial bodies orbiting each other, or the point at which objects are in equilibrium. When one object is traditionally thought of as orbiting another, such as the Moon orbiting the Earth or the Earth orbiting the Sun, the center of the orbit is virtually never at the direct center of the more massive body. Rather, both objects orbit the same point, the center of gravity, which can be more or less off-center within the more massive body.

The greater the difference in mass between two objects in the same orbital system, the greater the size discrepancy between their respective orbits. Two objects of equal mass orbiting the same point can travel in the same orbit and lie at opposite points on it, or they can travel in diverging elliptical orbits around the center of mass. In a system like that of the Earth and the Sun, on the other hand, the more massive body hardly moves with respect to the less massive one.

The centroid of two bodies orbiting each other can be found by calculating the distance between the more massive body and the centroid. This distance is given by the distance between the centers of the two bodies, multiplied by the mass of the smaller body divided by the combined mass of both bodies. If r1 is used to represent the distance between the center of the largest mass and the centroid, then a is used to represent the distance from the center of one mass to the center of the other, and m1 and m2 are the masses of the largest mass and smaller bodies , respectively, the following equation can be used: r1 = a * (m2 / (m1 + m2)). If r1 is less than one, the center of gravity is inside the more massive body.
