Generation Jones is a term coined by cultural historian Jonathon Pontell to refer to a group of people, mainly in the United States and the United Kingdom, who were born between the years 1954-1965. Some suggest that the end date for Generation Jones is actually 1968. This population group would previously have been classified as BaBoomer, particularly older members, or as Generation X for younger members.
Pontell and many others say that the statistical importance of Generation Jones cannot be underestimated. They were early computer pioneers and include people like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates. Additionally, they have a strong tendency to influence elections and are an extremely valuable market group for advertisers. Approximately one-third of Internet users are members of the Jones Generation, and many of today’s major corporations and corporate structures are owed to members of the Gen Jones, also called Jonesers.
There is still disparity between this group in terms of political orientation and personal history. Early Jonesers would have been influenced by or directly involved in the sexual revolution. They will remember the assassination of President Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr. and BobKennedy. Some would have served in Viet Nam or at least have strong memories of the conflict. Other Jonesers, especially when Gen Jones’ end of the year was extended into the late 1960s, would have reached maturity in the 1980s and have little or no recollection of these events.
The term Joneser comes from the conspicuous consumption idea of the 1980s and the idea of keeping up with the Joneses. The older members of Generation Jones could have been the first Yuppies and constitute part of the age of excess that the early 1980s represent for historians. There are literally thousands of articles interpreting Generation Jones’ importance in a variety of contexts.
Perhaps the most important of these interpretations are predictions based on Gen Jones’s influence on politics. Older generation Jones members tend to be more conservative in their politics. Yet the group as a whole is known for being volatile when it comes to politics. They are more likely to vote for a candidate from their political party if they want change. The Jonesers are held largely responsible in the United States for the election and re-election of President George W. Bush, but also for the 2006 turnaround, when voters successfully elected a Senate and House of Representatives at democratic majority.
Since Generation Jones constitutes a valuable population in terms of commercial and purchasing power, advertisers consider the group extremely important and may turn to them. In particular, the rapid development of new technologies, the latest cell phone, iPod or computer is directed by Joneser and is based on the idea that these once conspicuous consumers still want the latest technology toys.
