Megabus is an express bus system that operates in the US and UK, offering non-stop routes to various destinations. Fares can be as low as $1 USD, but luggage is limited to one bag. Megabus serves large metropolitan markets without intermediate stops and is more affordable than air travel. However, it takes longer to reach destinations. The less popular routes and times are usually discounted. Megabus has yet to add destinations to the Southeast or West in the US.

The Megabus is a bus system that operates between various points in the United States and the United Kingdom. It is an alternative to several other types of bus systems in operation and is billed as an express bus system because it offers non-stop, or nearly non-stop, routes to various destinations. The service started in the UK before moving to the US.

Just as airline fares increase if the reservation date is too close to the departure date, Megabus fares act in a similar way. Also, the amount of luggage is usually limited to a single bag. The Megabus company initially made a name for itself by offering promotional deals where inter-city service was available for as little as $1 US dollar (USD).

Fares for the Megabus have generally increased since that promotional period, although it is still possible to find those deeply discounted fares from time to time. Even so, the fare for Megabus remains more affordable than air travel between the cities it serves. Of course, it should be noted that the Megabus service takes much longer to reach the destinations than the air service. Still, for those who are not worried about time and are budget conscious, it can be a good option to go from one city to another.

Megabus can often be a faster option for intercity bus travel because traditional bus services make more stops in the hope of picking up more customers. Megabus has built its business around serving large metropolitan markets without intermediate stops. However, if a route passes through a major city on the way to your final destination, you can make a quick stop for any drop-off or pickup in that major city. For example, the Megabus route between Chicago, Illinois, and Cincinnati, Ohio also makes a stop in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Also, as with airline tickets, the less popular routes and times are usually discounted over the more popular routes. Often these routes depart in the early hours of the morning and also arrive at destinations at inconvenient times. Again, these routes appeal to a certain segment of the population and are offered for that reason.

One of the problems that has prevented Megabus from being widely recognized in the United States is its lack of a national system. While Megabus began service in the Midwest and expanded into parts of the Northeastern United States and Canada, it has yet to add destinations to the Southeast or West. This may come in future years.
