The term “New World Order” can refer to global cooperation or a centralized and oppressive government. Some believe it is a conspiracy for a one-world government, with symbols on US currency and organizations like the UN and WTO as evidence. Theories about who is behind it vary, but some see it as a solution to global problems. Fiction portrays it positively or negatively, with examples such as Star Trek and 1984.
Depending on one’s world view, the expression “New World Order” can characterize one’s optimistic view of global cooperation, or one’s negative view of a globally centralized and oppressive government. For some, it refers to a conspiracy that suggests secret societies within all governments seek to create a one world government that will significantly affect the freedom of citizens in individual countries or states. Institutions such as the League of Nations and the European Union are seen as tending towards the New World Order. Some conspiracy theorists believe that part of how this will be established is through mind control, whether subliminal as in the media, is direct.
Those who believe that a New World Order is being established point to many events in history that suggest a trend towards a single governing world. First, they believe that many symbols on US currency are an attempt to subtly promote single government. Conspiracy theorists point to symbols common to Freemasons, such as the eye at the top of the pyramid on the dollar bill.
Some milestones in history that some believe are the foundations for the New World Order are as follows:
Establishment of the United Nations
Institution of the Universal Product Code, for use in grocery stores and retail stores
Establishment of the World Trade Organization
Invention of microchips that could be implanted in humans
There are many other factors that people believe indicate a subliminal effort to promote the New World Order. There are also many people who blame one group or another for trying to promote it. Those who are anti-Semitic may view the Jewish people as an attempt to establish a New World Order. People who are extremely leftist in their politics claim that it was mainly founded by the very wealthy.
Pat Buchanan, who published a book The New World Order in 1991, asserts a Christian fundamentalist view that groups like the World Trade Organization are establishing this one government and that it will be specifically anti-Christian. He also claims it was founded by Satanists or those influenced by Satan.
President George W. Bush’s opponents believe that the war in Iraq is a deliberate attempt to make the United States superior to all other nations. They believe that any objection to the American method of governing a nation would be met with military force.
Theories about who is behind the New World Order expand exponentially beyond these examples mentioned above. Not all people think that such an order, or a single governing force, would be a terrible thing. Some believe that the only way to address significant problems in exceptionally poor countries is to have a united world, a single tax system, and equivalent aid and freedom for all. Many science fiction novels, films and TV series depict a beneficent New World Order.
For example, Star Trek predicts a universe where the world is part of the United Federation of Planets and under one rule. HG Wells’ book The New World Order makes a huge case for a single world government although he predicts that some will find the early years of such a government quite challenging and difficult.
Many works of written and filmed fiction portray this type of government in an extremely negative light. Movies with depictions of the oppression caused by it include V for Vendetta and Serenity. Novels such as 1984 and Brave New World depict a single government that rules by oppression and by killing those who oppose its goals.
