What’s the notch?

Carving is the process of cutting notches in metal stock for welding, bending, and folding applications. The angle and precision of the cuts are crucial for proper material-to-material contact and are typically done by metal cutting band saws, punch presses, or shear presses. The efficiency of the process depends on the operator’s skills.

Carving is a process of bevel cutting various types of metal stock. Notches are made to create a vertical cut in a pipe or sheet metal. Intaglio is used in many different metal applications.

A notch is cut inward from the edge of the material and is always cut at a measured angle calculated based on the application requiring the notch. The vertical cut that is made in the blank is also made perpendicular to the edge of the material. This cut is usually done by a metal cutting band saw or a punch press or shear to ensure accuracy in the manufacturing process.

The most common application for which grooves are used in pipe material is welding. A notch is typically cut into the pipe to allow another piece of pipe or metal to be attached perpendicularly. This allows for as much connection as possible between the two materials to be welded together. In these cases, the notching process can also be performed on the end of the tube blank which is joined perpendicularly to another blank for the same material-to-material contact purposes.

Notching is also usually done on flat stock for bending and folding applications. It is generally done using a punch press or metal shear press. The tabs created by the notching and bending processes are often the contact points that are then welded, either by a spot welder or a wire welding process.

These applications are typically made for canister fabrication or heating and cooling applications. These notches are also created in perpendicular angle cuts, working inward from the edge of the flat material. In more recent applications, these notches are created through the use of CNC metal cutting machining.

In most manufacturing and manufacturing environments, the rate at which these materials can be carved is usually within the control of the person operating the machinery. The press is set to run at a speed determined by the operator, and the material that is “feed” to the machine runs at the fastest speed the operator can maintain. Consequently, the efficiency of the carving process directly depends on the skills of the person who operates and feeds the machine that carries out the process.
