The Praxis II exam measures knowledge and teaching skills for K-12 teachers. It includes subject assessments, PLT tests, and Teaching Foundations tests. Passing is required for teacher certification in many US states. The exam is administered at test centers and test takers should bring valid ID and pencils/pens. Contact ETS or visit their website for more information on materials needed for preparation.

The Praxis II® exam is a series of tests created by the Educational Testing Service® (ETS), a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting quality education for people around the world. The exams measure knowledge of the subjects that prospective teachers from K to 12 will be teaching in the classroom. The tests also measure teaching skills and general knowledge.

The Praxis II® consists of several exams including subject assessments, Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) tests, and Teaching Foundations tests. In many US states, anyone wishing to enter the teaching field must take the Praxis II® exam to become licensed and certified as a teacher. Passing the tests is an important step towards a career in teaching.

Subject assessment includes multiple choice and constructed response test questions. The Principles of Learning and Teaching Tests are divided into several categories. Applicants can register to take the Early Childhood Examination, Grades K through Sixth Grade Exam, Grade Fifth through Ninth Examination, or Grade Seventh through Twelfth Examination. The PLT consists of questions based on case studies. Examiners are provided with multiple choice and constructed response questions.

The Teaching Foundations test measures knowledge in multiple subjects, Language Arts, English, Maths, Social Sciences, and Science. The multiple subject examination is administered to candidates for elementary teaching. The questions are asked through a multiple choice and a constructed answer.

The Praxis II® exam is administered at test centers throughout the United States. Those who need to take the exam can register at Ets.org. If an individual is unsure of which Praxis II® exam they should take, it is important that they check their state’s testing requirements to ensure they are registering for the appropriate Praxis II® exam.

On the day of the test, test takers should wear layers of clothing to accommodate for the varying room temperatures. They will need to bring valid identification so that the test supervisor can verify their identification. Naturally, all test takers should bring several number two pencils to the test site.
Some exams may require the candidate to use a ballpoint pen, so it’s always best to bring some pens as well. Proctors will keep all mobile phones and electronic devices away from the test site so that candidates are not disturbed while completing the exam. Anyone registered to take the Praxis II® exam should contact ETS® or visit their website for more information on any other materials needed. Visiting the public library or bookstore will provide the prospective test taker with books and software that will help them prepare for the Praxis II® exam.
