The present simple is a tense used in English to express ongoing or repeating actions in the present, and can also indicate actions that started in the past and continue into the present or future. It has four forms, with the simple present being the most basic. Regular verbs are formed by adding “-s” to the third person singular. It can also be used to indicate events planned in the near future. Other present tense forms, such as present continuous and present perfect, stem from the simple present and express more complicated ideas.

The present simple is a tense used in English that expresses the idea that a certain action is occurring in the present, often used with actions or states of being that are ongoing or repeating. This particular tense can also indicate that an action started in the past and continues in the present, unlike past tense verbs which indicate that an action started and ended in the past. Some uses of the present simple can also indicate that an action will continue to occur into the future, but that it will also continue into the present.

In English, there are four different forms of the present tense, all of which are used in some way to indicate that an action is taking place in the present tense. One of the most basic and simple forms of the present tense is the simple present, upon which all the other three forms expand. The present simple can be created by using a subject and then using an appropriate verb that is in the present basic form.

For regular verbs in English, this is typically formed by simply using the verb itself for the first, second and third person plural and adding an “-s” to the end of it for the third person singular. Examples of the simple first-person present include “I run” and “I jump.” In the second person, or third person plural, this tense is formed in much the same way as “You run” or “They jump,” while in the third person singular, an “-s” is typically added at the end: “He runs.” or “She jumps”.

The present simple is used to express an action that is ongoing or repeating, as it indicates that something is happening in the present although not necessarily happening at the immediate moment of the statement. “I run everyday” indicates an ongoing action extended into the present, even though the speaker may not be running at that particular moment. “You jump every time you sneeze” indicates an action that is repeating itself, even if it’s not necessarily happening right now. “They dance together every Friday” indicates ongoing action that continues into the present and implies that the action is likely to continue into the future.

This tense can also be used to indicate events planned in the near future, such as a flight leaving or a party starting. In this case, the statement is phrased as “The plane leaves tonight at 6am” or “Lesson starts at 8am tomorrow morning”.

Other present tense forms often spring from the simple present, although they can express more complicated ideas. The present continuous, for example, indicates that an action is happening at that moment, such as “I’m jumping.” The present perfect tense is used to indicate that something has happened in the present that is a change in condition from the past, such as “I learned about the present tense.” The continuous present perfect, which is a little more complicated than the simple present, indicates that something happened in the past and continues to happen, such as “I ran for hours.”
